A Future Filled with Unknowns Is Everyone’s Reality
Turning Uncertainty Into An Unexpected Calling
Uncertainty is the only certainty we all share. No matter how carefully we plan, how thoroughly we prepare, or how deeply we believe we understand the path ahead, the future remains an open-ended question. A future filled with unknowns is not an unfortunate anomaly, it is literally everyone’s reality. And within this truth lies both a challenge and a gift - the opportunity to find, shape, and live with purpose.
From the moment we are born, we enter a world of shifting landscapes. We are told to chase dreams, build careers, find love, and create stability. Yet none of these things come with any guarantees. The job we train for years might become obsolete. The person we love might leave us. Our health which we may take for granted may falter. It can feel overwhelming, even frightening, to realise that nothing is fixed.
But perhaps it is not meant to be.
The unpredictability of the future, while often unnerving, also opens up the deepest questions about who we are, and why we are here.
In a world where we cannot control outcomes, what can we control? Our purpose. Our response. The way we choose to live, even when the path is unclear.
Purpose is not a destination. It is not something waiting to be found at the end of a neatly planned road. Instead, purpose is something we cultivate through living with intention, through following the pull of what matters to us, even when the way forward is murky. Often, it is in the midst of life’s uncertainties I’ve found I’m deeply invited to find meaning. .
A redundancy might spark a reinvention.
A health scare interrupts everything and can set us on a path of self discovery.
A heartbreak might awaken compassion.
These detours might well lead us to an unexpected calling.
In life, we often set our sights on clear goals, so these detours can feel like failures, losses, or misdirection. But with time, many of us look back and realise: the detour was the direction. This has certainly happened to me many times.
Detours pull us off autopilot. They force us to ask different questions, to slow down, and to consider paths we might never have chosen for ourselves. Maybe you were made redundant, and in the quiet aftermath, you remembered your love for writing. Maybe illness stopped you in your tracks, and in healing, you discovered a desire to pay more attention to your body, or help others to do the same. Maybe motherhood, grief, burnout, or moving cities cracked open something entirely new in you, a part of yourself you hadn’t met before.
It is often in these very moments of disruption that an unexpected calling begins to whisper. Not loudly, not with certainty but gently, persistently. You find yourself drawn to something that feels meaningful, purposeful, and deeply yours. And because you were derailed from your original plan, you are finally still enough to hear it those whispers more clearly.
A calling doesn’t always arrive in grand declarations. It may begin as a curiosity, a quiet sense of ‘this matters to me.’ But over time, as you follow it, it reveals itself as a deeper part of who you are, something that feels less like ambition and more like alignment.
The truth is, our callings often hide in the very places we resist: like in the disappointments, the dead ends, the pauses we never wanted. These aren't signs we've gone off course. They are the course.
In a world filled with unknowns, detours are inevitable, and they aren’t necessarily setbacks. Sometimes, they are beautiful invitations, to live more fully, to love more deeply, to serve more honestly. A detour might not just change your route, it might change you. And in doing so, it might lead you right to the work, the people, the passion, or the purpose you never knew you were searching for.
When we accept that we do not and cannot know what’s ahead, we are freed to focus on what is within our grasp: the present moment and the values we bring to it. We begin to ask ourselves not ‘What will happen next?’ but ‘How do I want to show up?’
This shift can be profoundly empowering. Because in choosing purpose over prediction, we stop waiting for clarity and start creating it.
Everyone’s future is filled with unknowns. But that doesn’t make us powerless. It makes us human. And in that shared uncertainty lies our greatest common ground: the invitation to live with purpose, courage, heart, and the knowledge that meaning is not found by mapping out every step but by walking forward with openness, again and again and again.
In a world of unknowns, purpose is our compass.
Here are 5 powerful benefits to embracing uncertainty:
1. Unlocks Personal Growth
Uncertainty pushes you out of your comfort zone, where true growth happens. When you don’t know what’s next, you’re forced to adapt, learn, and become more resilient. The unknown becomes a space where confidence is built in the doing and self-awareness deepens.
2. Sparks Creativity and Innovation
When there’s no fixed path, you're free to imagine new possibilities. Uncertainty invites experimentation, creative thinking, and fresh approaches that wouldn’t arise in a rigid or overly structured environment.
3. Builds Emotional Resilience
Embracing uncertainty helps you develop inner strength. Rather than fearing change, you learn to navigate it with grace. Over time, this makes you more grounded, flexible, and able to cope with life’s inevitable twists and turns.
4. Opens the Door to Unexpected Opportunities
When you stop clinging to a specific outcome, you make room for surprises, people, passions, and paths you might never have planned for but are absolutely perfect for your growth and fulfilment. The detour, as we’ve explored, often becomes the way.
5. Deepens Your Connection to Purpose
Uncertainty forces you to ask deeper questions:
What really matters to me?
What do I want to stand for, even when things are unclear?
This reflection leads to a more authentic sense of purpose one that isn't based on predictability, but on values, passion, and meaning.

As we ‘move inwards’ this week I’ve created a peaceful guided meditation script that gently weaves in the theme of a beautiful detour leading to an unexpected calling. It’s designed to help you the listener connect with acceptance, trust, and inner purpose.
Guided Meditation: Trusting the Detour
Duration: 10–12 minutes
Intentional Tone: Soft, reassuring and spacious
Begin by finding a comfortable position.
Either sitting on your yoga mat or lying down. Wrap yourself in a cozy blanket or use cushions to rest your body and head.
Make sure you are feeling comfortable and allow your body to settle. Let your hands rest gently... your shoulders soften, your jaw relax, and your eyes close, if that feels safe for you.
Begin to bring your awareness to your breath
Noticing the gentle rise and fall
Inhale through the nose
And exhale slowly through the mouth
Breathe in calm...
Breathe out any tension...
Allow each breath to invite you into stillness... into presence...
Now, gently bring to mind a time in your life when things didn’t go to plan...
A moment where a path you were walking suddenly changed...
Maybe something ended. . . or shifted. . .
Maybe you felt lost. . . unsure of what comes next. . .
Just observe that moment from a distance, without judgment...
See it as a bend in the road... a detour you didn’t expect...
Now slowly, allow yourself to look deeper...
What came after that change?
Did something new emerge?
A new connection?
A creative spark?
A realisation about who you are... or what really matters?
Sometimes. . . the detour isn’t a mistake
Sometimes. . . it’s the beginning of a calling
Imagine now that you’re walking through a peaceful forest.
The path ahead is soft beneath your feet... and the sunlight filters through the trees.
You’re not in a hurry. You’re simply walking, curious and open.
Suddenly, the path begins to curve. It leads you somewhere you hadn’t planned, but instead of resisting, you curiously follow.
The air shifts and something in your heart whispers: this way
You don’t know what you’ll find, but somehow you trust the whispers
You feel supported by the earth beneath you and guided by something deeper within. . .
Now, gently place one hand on your heart.
Take a deep breath in and as you exhale, repeat silently:
‘I trust the detours.’
’I am open to unexpected callings.’
’Even in the unknown, I am guided.’
Breathe deeply, and feel those words ripple through your whole body, every cell...
You are exactly where you need to be. The road may twist and turn, but you are never truly lost. Each step you take is shaping something beautiful, even if you cannot yet see it.
Now, gently begin to slowly bring your awareness back to your body
Wiggle your fingers and toes, and sense your breath, deep and relaxed.
And then when you feel ready, gently open your eyes.
Carry with you the knowing:
Every detour holds the potential for discovery.
Every unexpected turn might just be the start of you becoming.
The hardest part is getting to your mat, continuing to show up for yourself with all the things you have to do and accomplish today.
Thank you for continuing to show up here. It’s an absolute pleasure to share this time with you. Thank you.
